Bob Beamon

Olympic Champion

In 1968, at just 22 years old, Bob Beamon made history in Mexico City with a leap that shattered the Olympic long jump record. His jump of 29' 2 1/2" surpassed the previous world and Olympic records by an astounding 1.8 feet—setting a mark that still stands nearly six decades later. Beamon's leap remains the oldest unbroken Olympic record in history and is still the Olympic record, as well as the second-longest wind-legal jump ever recorded.

The makers of the measuring instruments at the 1968 Olympic Games never anticipated anyone jumping as far as Beamon. His leap was so extraordinary that it coined a new term for exceptional athletic achievements: Beamonesque. Sports Illustrated ranked it among the five greatest moments of the 20th century. While many events from that era have faded into memory, Beamon’s incredible feat endures as a timeless symbol of triumph over adversity.

In recognition of his achievements, Beamon was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 1981 and the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1983. He has received numerous other honors throughout his life, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. Additionally, Beamon has served as an ambassador to the International Olympic Committee and as a Global Ambassador for the Special Olympics.
